Based on the principles of ECRR, the Burton Barr Public Library in Phoenix created an early literacy space for children birth to five and their families called The First Five Years/Los Primeros Cinco Anos. Through print, audio media, interactive early literacy displays, early literacy learning tools, and lots of books we hope to get the following messages across: 1) the parent/caregiver IS the child's first teacher, 2) having fun early on with books and stories leads to success in learning to read, and 3)children learn through play. There is also information for parents, caregivers, and teachers on the 6 early literacy skills, early brain development, and dialogic reading. The space includes a separated area for children birth to 2 with board books on the floor for easy access, letter and shape magnets, and various pre-writing and action/reaction manipulatives. Letter tracing tools, ABC and counting books, early writing magna doodles, rhyming interactives, and dialogic reading kits are also included in the space. In addition, we have begun a partnership with ASU's Education Department. Early childhood education interns spend several hours a week reading with children, playing with them using the early literacy materials, and assisting parents and other patrons in the area.
