Literacy, Singing, and Science

Singing helps children hear the distinct sounds that make up a word.  This is an important early literacy skill.  Songs and science both teach new vocabulary and introduce new ideas and concepts.

--Sing with your child in the car, on a walk, or at home.  you don't need a perfect voice, just enthusiasm.

--Encourage your child to ask questions.

--Children develop motor skills as they clap, jump, twirl, and spin to music.

--Make simple instruments by filling a plastic bottle with cereal or use a pie-tin and a wooden spoon.

--Read about topics that are interesting to your child:

Too Many Dinosaurs by Mercer Mayer
No T.Rex in the Library by Toni Buzzeo
Suppose You Meet a Dinosaur by Judy Sierra
My Healthy Body by Bobbie Kalman
Hygiene and Health by Claire Llewellyn
Growing Strong by Christina Goodings
Staying Well by Slim Goodbody
Actual Size by Steve Jenkins

This is the way we wash our hands, wash our hands, wash our hands.
This is the way we wash our hands so we won't get sick.

(Repeat with:  this is the way we turn on the water, pump the soap, dry our hands)
